How can medical marijuana help with MUSCLE SPASMS?

Definition of muscle spasms

Muscle spasm is a sudden, involuntary contraction of a muscle or a group of muscles. Muscle spasm is usually accompanied by a burst of pain, which lasts only several minutes. When Charley horse contracts a muscle in the leg, it is a classical example of the muscle spasm, caused by physical overload, and is not a threat. Nevertheless, sometimes it is better to seek medical attention to diagnose the cause of repeating spasms and pain. There are different types of muscle spasms depending on the muscle involved and the cause of the spasm. Muscle spasm may associate with: pulled muscle, dehydration, trauma, diseases like cerebral palsy or multiple sclerosis (MS), fibromyalgia, myofascial pain syndrome, muscular dystrophy, myopathy, back pain, angina, colic, damage to nerves or to the spinal cord. Sometimes it is a reaction to certain poisons like strychnine. In addition, one of the causes of asthma is the spasm of the muscle which coats the smaller bronchi.

How medical marijuana can help?

Medical marijuana has been proven to have analgesic, soothing and antispasmodic effects. Natural compounds in marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), bind to receptors present in our body and regulate pain sensation, appetite, mood, breathing and sleep. After it was officially approved it has been used with cancer, HIV and AIDS patients to successfully relive pain; as a beneficiary effect the patients have better mood and were more positive about their situation. Certain studies show, that smoking marijuana triggers broncho-dilation instead of broncho-constraint (narrowing of the air pathways) and, unlike opiates, doesn't trigger key respiratory depression (i.e. reduction of breathing). There are plenty of medical evidences of cannabis relieving MS-related symptoms, such as: pain, tremor, spasticity, depression and fatigue. University of California at San Diego reported in 2008, that patients with MS benefited from medical marijuana more than from other currently existing treatments. Another currently incurable disease, cerebral palsy, is characterized by abnormal muscle tone. The classical symptoms are spasticity, spasms, other involuntary movements. It has been proven that cannabis reduces the severity of muscle spasms and speech impediments associated with Cerebral Palsy. Individuals who used marijuana have regained various levels of muscle control. Compared with sedatives that inhibit natural development, marijuana increases the chances for natural development of the patients. Cannabis is also widely known to have anti-inflammatory properties, which means it can prevent many conditions caused by inflammation. More and more doctors, patients and clinics turn to medical marijuana in search of symptomatic relief and improving life quality of patients. If you want to join them, consult a doctor who believes in medical marijuana power and enjoy it.
