How can medical marijuana help with… DIARRHEA?

Definition of diarrhea.

Diarrhea is a condition of having unusually frequent bowel movements, which are loose or liquid. These bowel movements have to occur at least three times per day to be considered abnormal. In some situations, liquid stool is a normal response of the digestive system to stale or improperly cooked food. However, if the urge occurs more than once, your body may suffer from intoxication, and dehydrate due to continuous loss of water.

Diarrhea is a common condition – everyone typically experiences it at some point. In majority of cases, it does not last for more than two days, and wears off by itself. But in case of infection or severe intoxication, diarrhea can be hard to get rid off without proper treatment. The most common causes of infection are rotavirus, bacteria, or parasites. They are all acquired from food, contaminated water or directly from another infected person. Diarrhea can also be a sign of a serious bowel disorder (e.g. inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome). Regardless the reason behind it, diarrhea can cause a significant amount of water and salt loss.

How can medical marijuana help?

Dehydration is a serious problem when your body is losing water quickly, which happens with diarrhea. It may seem obvious that one should drink water to replenish the amount lost, but the diarrhea condition does not necessarily induce thirst. This is where smoking medical marijuana comes in handy – thirst naturally arouses after smoking. One may argue that a regular cigarette would also do, but it has already been proven that tobacco smoke is far more dangerous (and addictive) to health than cannabis smoke (see Tobacco Dependence for details).

Moreover, clinical evidence shows that medical marijuana contains agents that speed up the digestive tract, helping it assimilate more nutrients within small periods of time. Since diarrhea is apparently a digestive disorder, metabolism boost would certainly be of help in getting back to normal.
