How can medical marijuana help with… CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME?

Definition of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome, abbreviated as CTS is a compression of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel as it travels through the wrist. This causes pain, numbness and tingling in the hand and wrist, and sometimes leaves the sufferer unable to perform grabbing or grasping movements. Although there are several conditions in which the CTS can be observed as a secondary symptom (e.g. diabetes, obesity, hypothyroidism), in recent decades the most common underlying cause is performing repetitive tasks with hand and wrist, such as continuously clicking computer mouse buttons. This has been widely portrayed in the media, calling the Carpal tunnel syndrome a ‘gamers’ disease’.

Discomfort commonly experienced by CTS sufferers is the intermittent numbness of the thumb, index, and middle fingers. It often occurs at night, with regard to sleep position, which can wake the person up from their sleep. Elastic wrist splints may provide some relief, but if left untreated, CTS may lead to permanent nerve damage and constant numbness or atrophy of wrist and arm muscles.

How can medical marijuana help?

Traditional CTS treatments include use of night wrist bands and corticosteroid injection. However, only the surgical intervention is able to completely reverse the effect, and put the carpal ligament in the right place. Painful as it is, CTS will cause even more discomfort in surgery recovering period. To help battle pain and possible inflammatory process, medical marijuana can be used. Cancer-related studies of marijuana painkiller properties have shown that it can manage pain outbreaks as well as persistent nagging ache. Cannabis-based ointments may be applied to the affected area to alleviate inflammation and mend surgical cuts on skin and bones. Thus, medical marijuana can handle inflammation of soft tissues, nerve damage, and joint pain, making it a perfect combo in carpal tunnel syndrome treatment.
