With the wide variety of ways of marijuana consuming, it seems almost impossible for a person who wants to get high not to find a way to do it. However, it is true that some people are not affected by the cannabis component THC at all.
If you could not get high when you tried weed for the first time, the problem was most likely with the quality of the product. However, if you tried marijuana for several times and did not see the effects, then you might be unlucky enough to be among the people with a so-called “cannot get high” syndrome. If you can’t get high by smoking or vaporizing cannabis, or eating marijuana edibles, it is your destiny to stay clean of THC.
The Internet is full of reports about people who cannot get high no matter how hard they try. People tell stories about their failures and ask for a solution to their problems. They try to master their breathing to inhale more smoke, they eat tons of weed cookies and only get high on sugar, and they are coached by marijuana experts. All their efforts are of no use. But what are the reasons? Are they only psychological?
Almost a year ago, a study was published in Science. Scientists from the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research studied this “cannot get high” syndrome and found out what can cause it. According to them, the bodies of some people are a natural buzz-kill themselves. The hormone pregnenolone that our bodies produce can eliminate the effects of THC.
Until recently, the effects of this hormone remained uninvestigated. However, the scientists discovered the connection between cannabis and this hormone. THC and some other drugs increase levels of pregnenolone that is thought to be a precursor of downstream active steroids. The infusion of THC activates the CB1 cannabinoid receptor that increases the synthesis of the hormone. In its turn, pregnenolone acts like a signaling-specific inhibitor of the receptor and counters most of the behavioral and somatic effects of THC. The new process reveals an unknown loop that protects the brain from the CB1 overactivation.
The new discovery has a great potential for the treatment of tetrahydrocannabinol intoxication and even addiction. This is truly a breakthrough in the cannabis community. The research of this hormone and its effects promises a great future for patients who want to take medical marijuana but do not want to get high. This may be a way for the researchers to isolate the useful medicinal effects of the plant from its behavioral impact.
Unfortunately, all these studies cannot help people who suffer from the inability to get high. However, due to their complaints, scientists now can go further in their studies of medicinal weed. And who knows, maybe, their work will lead them to the discovering an agent that can reduce the influence of pregnenolone. Until them, people who want to get high have only two options: either keep trying and looking for a way to get high at least once in their lives, or simply resign to this cruel fate.
